FAQ

HOW DOES IT WORK

IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. IPL can be used for hair removal and for skin rejuvenation. Glatt Skin Zap uses IPL to help break the cycle of hair growth by transferring light energy that is absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft. This then disables the hair follicle such that treated hairs naturally fall out over the course of a few days to a few weeks. Over time, hair regrowth is slowed down

IPL uses a range of wavelengths of light to produce a single white flash, whereas laser uses a single wavelength of light to produce a single beam. Given that IPL uses a spectrum of wavelengths, it is both gentle and effective for a wide range of purposes including the popular use for hair removal.

HOW TO USE

(check out the treatment steps here)

Absolutely! There have been numerous worldwide studies that demonstrate the safety and effectiveness of IPL for hair removal. Due to this fact, it has become an extremely popular safe and effective method of hair removal at home and in clinics.

We advise that you exercise caution when treating yourself as not everyone is suitable for IPL treatments. Some darker skin types and natural hair colours are not suitable for IPL (see skin tone & hair colour chart). If you have been recently exposed to the sun, or are photosensitive (including due to side effects of certain medications), you would also need your skin to rest before doing an IPL treatment.

IPL is far less painful relative to other hair removal treatments. Most users report feeling a warm sensation. For thicker hair, some users report feeling a sensation similar to rubber band being flicked.

Most customers begin to notice a reduction of hair after just 3-4 treatments, with complete results after 6-12 treatments. However, results vary from person to person.

We recommend using your Glatt Skin Zap once every 1-2 weeks for the first 6 to 12 treatments. After this period use once a month, for 4 months or until satisfied. To maintain hairless smooth skin, use your handset once every 2 to 3 months, or as needed when there is ~30% hair regrowth. There is no need to use it more than once a week, as IPL is only effective in the growing phase of your hair cycle.

You can use your Glatt Skin Zap on your entire body, including Face (though we don't recommend using it near the eyes) and Brazilian area.

Yes! Glatt Skin Zap is suitable for both men and women.

Yes! With 5 different intensity levels, you can adjust the levels according to your skin sensitivity, skin tone and hair thickness.

The Glatt Skin Zap is however not suitable if you have photosensitivity.

IPL is suitable for all but the darkest skin tones. IPL relies on melanin in the hair absorbing the light energy, and therefore IPL is not effective on very light blonde, red, or grey coloured hair. Refer to the Skin Tone & Body Hair Colour chart below to see if IPL is suitable for you.

You should shave the area you wish to treat prior to treatment. A close to skin shave is recommended to allow the light energy to reach the hair follicle effectively to achieve the best results. In between treatments you should only shave when required.

Both before and in between treatments, we recommend not to wax, pluck, thread or epilate as these hair removal methods remove the entire root, which is what absorbs the light during IPL treatment.

No, it isn't necessary to wear eye protection while using Glatt Skin Zap. It is fitted with a sensor and will not pulse and light unless the entire window is pressed against your skin. That being said you should never try and look directly into the light as it flashes.

When using Glatt Skin Zap as recommended, side effects are rare. Redness is the most common side effect from IPL. There may also be itching days after treatment when the hair follicles attempt regrowth. We recommend you apply aloe vera gel or moisturiser after treatment and moisturise regularly.

Glatt Skin Zap offers extremely long lasting results. The term “permanent” hair removal technically means that there will be no regrowth of hair for 6 months. This is also true for results from clinics. After completing your initial sessions with our device you will only have to use your device once every few months to maintain smooth, hairless skin.

Not at all! Unlike IPL clinics/ salons, this is a one-off purchase. There is no need for replacements or refills.

The Glatt Skin Zap has 600,000 flashes, meaning it can last you (a single user) 20 years.

CONTRAINDICATIONS

IPL can definitely be used on hormonal hair growth, and has proven to be quite effective.

You should not IPL over very dark freckles or moles, however light freckles are fine.

You should not IPL over tattoos. The light energy will be more attracted to the pigments in the skin, rather than the melanin in the hair which can cause a reaction in the skin and blister. You should always go around your tattoos.

If you have recently been sun tanning, we recommend waiting 2 weeks before using your Glatt Skin Zap. You should wait 48 hours after using Glatt Skin Zap before tanning (both natural and artificial). We recommend waiting till any artificial tan fades before using our handsets, as the light energy may be more attracted to the pigments in the skin, rather than the melanin in the hair. You can reapply the tan after your session once the skin has relaxed.

Although there is no evidence showing that IPL has negative effects on pregnant or breastfeeding women, we still don’t recommend using Glatt Skin Zap as a precaution.

Although there is no evidence showing that IPL has negative effects on menstruating women, we still don’t recommend using Glatt Skin Zap as a precaution.

MAINTENANCE

Yes, this is completely normal. As the light energy is heating the hair, you may smell a slight burning but this just means there may be some hairs that have not been shaved or might have been in the treatment window. Please ensure that you have prepped the skin correctly, and that the skin is completely shaved before starting your session. Always clean your device after use and ensure nothing gets inside the treatment window.

We recommend cleaning the device after each use. You can use an alcohol wipe, or any antibacterial product to clean down the device and the treatment window after treatment. Ensure that it is powered off, and not plugged in when doing so. You should then store the device in a cool, dry place after use (once the device is completely dry).

As there is heat involved, slight blackening on/around the light window is normal and will not affect your Glatt Skin Zap, how it works or the results at all.

Glatt Skin Zap comes with a 12 months warranty, that covers any manufacturer faults. If you face any issues with your device, please contact us at contact@glattskin.com

Glatt Skin tests every product to ensure quality at all times. In case treatment with the device does not work for you, we offer a 90-day money back guarantee.
